Bears Decline Mitch Trubisky Option

In recent NFL news the Chicago Bears decline Mitch Trubisky option. Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky will be going into the final year of his rookie contract without an extension after the Bears announced that they plan to decline his fifth-year option.

Trubisky was selected with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Mitch was expected to be the team’s franchise quarterback. After a promising rookie season, Trubisky flourished in head coach Matt Nagy’s first season in charge. However, things change.

The Bears went 12-4 that season as Trubisky passed for 3,223 yards. 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 421 yards and three touchdowns and made the Pro Bowl that season.

Last season, Trubisky regressed and finished the season tied for 27th in touchdown passes (17), and was 21st in passing yards (3,138), 32nd in yards gained per pass attempt (6.1) and 28th in quarterback rating (83.0). The Bears went 8-8 and missed the playoffs.

During the offseason, the Bears acquired quarterback Nick Foles from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Foles didn’t see a lot of action last season after being replaced by rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew after getting injured in the first game of the season.

Last month, Bears general manager Ryan Pace said that Trubisky and Foles will compete for the starting job in 2020. Competition anyone?

“We’ve increased competition at a critical position and we talked to both players, and the way we view this is it’s an open competition,” Pace said on April 3. “And credit to both those guys for embracing it.”

The Bears traded up a spot with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 to draft Trubisky. This ahead of quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.

With Foles due to make $21 million this season, the Bears will wait until after the season to decide if they want to keep Trubisky. Or start looking for their next franchise quarterback.
